A comment by Mr. Jan van Benthem, until September 2004 Chief and Foreign Editor of ‘EO Twee Vandaag’ (Dutch Television News Channel 2):
‘I would like to declare that our senior reporter Emerson Vermaat has distinguished himself by his unparalleled knowledge of international dossiers. His thorough approach, combined with his determination in the field has led to many in-depth reports in our programme.
During his career, Mr. Vermaat also has shown not to shy away from difficult and sometimes dangerous situations. He continued filming when militias attacked a political demonstration in Panama which Mr. Vermaat was following, killing a number of people and seriously wounding the opposition’s vice-presidential candidate. He travelled alone into Maoist rebel territory in Peru, was often in the combat-zones of former Yugoslavia and recently survived a machine-gun burst in the Gaza-strip. In all circumstances, he continued with his mission and reported on the situation in the area.’
